Last night, Denton, Texas bid farewell to Jerry Abbott, the patriarch of PANTERA’s founding members, drummer Vincent “Vinnie Paul” Abbott and guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott
Jerry, just five days shy of his 81st birthday, passed away in a local caregiving facility.
His dear friend Danny Wood Sr. shared the news on social media earlier today, confirming Jerry‘s departure. He wrote: “I’m very sad to tell everyone of the passing of a close friend Jerry Abbott. He died last night in a Denton care giving facility. His Family is having a private Funeral for Family and close Friends with a Memorial Service being planned. Details soon.”
Jerry‘s life was steeped in music; a skilled musician and recording engineer, he played a pivotal role in shaping PANTERA‘s journey from its inception in 1981 until the band secured a major-label deal in 1989 under the leadership of Philip Anselmo.
A decade after Dimebag‘s tragic death, Jerry penned his memoir, “Over My Left Shoulder: The Life And Times Of Jerry Abbott,” which was published through CreateSpace, an imprint of the global online retailer Amazon.
The loss of Dimebag, who was fatally shot during a DAMAGEPLAN performance in December 2004 alongside three others, shook the music world deeply.
In May 2007, Dimebag was honored with a posthumous induction into the Hollywood RockWalk, a ceremony attended by Vinnie Paul, Jerry Abbott, Dimebag‘s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney, and notable figures from bands like ALICE IN CHAINS, ANTHRAX, KISS, SLAYER, and Ozzy Osbourne‘s group.
Tragedy struck again when Vinnie Paul passed away on June 22, 2018, at his Las Vegas residence at the age of 54. His demise was attributed to dilated cardiomyopathy and severe coronary artery disease, ailments that had progressively weakened his heart’s ability to function optimally.
