OTEP, the band fronted by the multi-talented singer, poet, illustrator, author, and activist Otep Shamaya, is set to release their forthcoming studio album, “The God Slayer,” via Cleopatra Records on September 15
This follow-up to their 2018 release, “Kult 45,” offers a compelling blend of original tracks that showcase their creative inspiration, as well as reimagined versions of chart-topping hits from various genres, including pop, rap, and grunge. These hits are originally by artists such as Eminem, Billie Eilish, SLIPKNOT, Lil Peep, and Olivia Rodrigo.
The album’s latest single showcases OTEP‘s bold and unapologetic nu-metal interpretation of Eminem‘s “The Way I Am,” infusing the rap god’s raw anger with her distinctive fervor. OTEP‘s rendition of this iconic rap classic demolishes the idealized image of celebrity, delivering a powerful and bass-heavy sound, intense verses, a driving rhythm, high-energy screams, and a potent breakdown. Otep‘s lyrical prowess shines through her unique interpretation of this hip-hop hit, skillfully maintaining the song’s rhythm while reshaping the lyrics into something entirely original.
On October 3, 2000, Eminem released “The Way I Am” as the second single from his album “The Marshall Mathers LP.” This track achieved double-platinum certification in the U.S., critical acclaim worldwide, including platinum certification in the U.K. and gold status in Sweden. Eminem‘s undeniable talent thrust him into the spotlight, yet it also brought forth criticism and controversy, as not everyone was prepared to hear his unfiltered perspective. Nevertheless, this adversity only fueled his creative drive, ultimately establishing him as the best-selling rap artist of all time.
