Concerned for his well-being, Layne‘s mother immediately contacted emergency services by dialing 911. Tragically, on April 19th, 2002, the police discovered Layne‘s decomposed body at his home in Seattle.
While reports indicate that Layne had passed away approximately two weeks earlier, on April 5th, 2002, the exact moment of his passing remains uncertain. The subsequent autopsy report revealed that he had died from the consumption of a dangerous combination of heroin and cocaine.
Regrettably, the last person known to have seen Layne alive was his ALICE IN CHAINS bandmate and bassist, Mike Starr, who expressed remorse for not taking action by calling emergency services to potentially save his friend’s life. It’s important to note that Mike Starr himself later succumbed to a drug overdose in 2011.

While not having a single song completely prepared, with only ideas and basic framework, as well as not even having a name for the band, McCready scheduled an unannounced show for the then newly-formed group at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle on October 12, 1994.
