6 – JUNKYARD
Fueled by the rebellious spirit of the late 80s, JUNKYARD formed in Los Angeles in 1987.
JUNKYARD started out with a different crew than the guys who ended up on their first record. The original lineup had Max Gottlieb shredding on guitar and Johnny Hell keeping the beat on drums. Even skateboarding legend Tony Alva jammed with them for a bit! Things shifted though, and the core group became David Roach on vocals, Chris Gates on guitar, Clay Anthony on bass, and Patrick Muzingo on drums. Right before recording their first album, Brian Baker, who used to play with DAG NASTY and MINOR THREAT, joined in on guitar.
Even though Southern rock was a big influence, Baker wasn’t a huge fan of the whole rebel flag, pickup truck lifestyle that often came with it. Despite Baker‘s reservations, JUNKYARD landed a deal with Geffen Records and released their self-titled debut in 1989. The album, produced by Tom Werman, was a cool mix of Southern rock, boogie-woogie, and some good old AC/DC vibes all rolled into one.
Tracks like “Hollywood” balanced aggressive riffs with soaring vocals and catchy hooks, earning them comparisons to GUNS N’ ROSES and a significant deal of critical acclaim. JUNKYARD disbanded in 1992, however, the band reformed in 2000 and remains active today, touring and releasing new music, keeping the flame of 80s hard rock alive for a new generation of fans.
5 – SLEAZE BEEZ
Hailing from the Netherlands, SLEAZE BEEZ emerged in 1987 with a sound that embodied the flamboyant spirit of Hair Metal. Founded by drummer Jan Koster and guitarist Chriz van Jaarsveld, the band went through a few vocalists before solidifying their lineup with Englishman Andrew Elt in 1989.
SLEAZE BEEZ‘s music blended glam aesthetics with heavy riffs and soaring vocals. Their 1990 album, “Screwed Blued & Tattooed,” peaked at 115 on the Billboard 200 chart, largely due to the success of the MTV hit, “Stranger Than Paradise.”
Although lineup changes and shifting musical trends hampered their long-term mainstream success, the band released four studio albums and enjoyed a devoted following throughout the early to mid-90s. They briefly reunited in 2010 before calling it quits the following year.
4 – BABYLON A.D.
Imagine this: it’s 1987, San Francisco. Out pops BABYLON A.D., a new hard rock band ready to blow stuff up. Fronted by the screamin’ vocalist Derek Davis, they had these two killer guitarists, Danny De La Rosa and Ron Freschi, layin’ down the riffs, plus Robb Reid on bass and Jamey Pacheco crushin’ the drums. Their live shows were legendary – pure, high-octane rock and roll.
Fast forward a couple years, and BABYLON A.D. is catchin’ the eye of bigwigs in the industry. One big shot, Clive Davis from Arista Records, sees them play a show in L.A. and is like, “Whoa, these guys are the real deal!” They sign BABYLON A.D., and in 1990, their self-titled debut album hits the scene.
Tracks like “Bang Go the Bells,” “Hammer Swings Down,” and “The Kid Goes Wild” become anthems for headbangers everywhere. They tour like crazy, put out another album, “Nothing Sacred” in 1992, but things change in the music world. Band members come and go, the sound shifts, and by the mid-90s, they take a break. Fear not, though, because true to their hard rock spirit, BABYLON A.D. just wouldn’t stay down. They’ve gotten back together a few times over the years, and still continue to tour and even release new music for their die-hard fans.
3 – SEA HAGS
SEA HAGS! These guys crashed onto the San Francisco scene in 1985 like a rogue wave of sound. Fronted by the fiery Ron Yocom and anchored by the steady bass of Chris Schlosshardt, they weren’t afraid to put in the dirty work – two jobs by day, shredding guitars by night – to chase that rock and roll dream.
Imagine this: you’re at a SF gig in the mid-eighties, and who do you see opening? THE SEA HAGS, sharing the stage with legends like DEAD KENNEDYS, MOTORHEAD and THE RAMONES – they weren’t picky! By 1987, their grit and talent paid off, landing them a sweet record deal with Chrysalis.
Their debut album was a wild ride to say the least. First, METALLICA‘s Kirk Hammett himself helped them put together some killer demos. Then THE CULT‘s Ian Astbury throws his hat in the ring to produce. Talk about rock royalty connections! In the end, they landed Mike Clink, fresh off producing GUNS N’ ROSES‘ “Appetite for Destruction” – that guy knew how to capture raw energy on tape.
The lineup wasn’t set in stone either. Guitarist Frank Wilsey jumped on board, and Adam Maples took over the drum throne. For some added firepower, Kevin Russell, who jammed with Ted Nugent, even lent a hand on guitar. Oh, and did I mention they snuck in a track, “Under The Night Stars,” for the horror flick “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master“? How metal is that?
Sadly, the SEA HAGS‘ story takes a nosedive in 1990. Apparently, the drugs and bad management that had been swirling around them finally got the best of the band. They called it quits in February, and things scattered like roaches when you turn on the lights.
2 – BEAU NASTY
While their time in the spotlight was brief, BEAU NASTY brought a potent dose of hair metal to the late 1980s. Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the band formed in 1988. Led by vocalist Mark Anthony Fretz, BEAU NASTY released their sole studio album, “Dirty, But Well Dressed,” in 1989 under WTG Records.
The album showcased their knack for catchy hooks and energetic hard rock, with the single “Shake It” garnering airplay. They even landed a supporting slot on LOVERBOY‘s national tour. However, despite their initial momentum, internal strife and a rapidly changing musical landscape proved challenging for the massively quaffed dudes. By the end of 1989, BEAU NASTY had disbanded.
Though short-lived, BEAU NASTY would leave their own mark on the Hair Metal scene. Their energetic live shows and infectious melodies earned them a devoted following. Today, they remain a cult favorite, cherished by fans who appreciate their unadulterated take on the genre. While they never achieved mainstream success, BEAU NASTY‘s music continues to capture the spirit of the late 1980s glam metal era in a really cool way.
1 – TIGERTAILZ
Hailing from Cardiff, Wales, TIGERTAILZ emerged in the glam metal scene of the late 1980s. Formed in 1984 after responding to an ad in a record store, they were initially called STAGEFRIGHT. The band consisted of guitarist Jay Pepper, bassist Pepsi Tate, and drummer Ian Welch (later replaced by Ace Finchum). After adding guitarist Phil Harling and vocalist Jim Dovey, they honed their sound and captured a local following. In 1985, they transformed into TIGERTAILZ, a name reflecting their flamboyant image and melodic rock with glam influences.
Steevi Jaimz replaced Dovey on vocals, solidifying the classic lineup. They signed with Music for Nations and released their self-titled debut album in 1987. While not a massive commercial hit, the album gained a cult following with anthems like “Living Without You.” Their sound evolved on subsequent releases, incorporating heavier riffs and keyboards. After Jaimz departure, he would be replaced by vocalist Kim Hooker for the 1990 album “Bezerk“, which marked the band’s peak, achieving Top 40 status in the UK and spawning hit singles like “Love Bomb Baby” and “Heaven.”
TIGERTAILZ enjoyed considerable popularity throughout the early 1990s, touring extensively and sharing stages with established acts like BON JOVI and SKID ROW. However, lineup changes and the decline of glam metal in the mid-90s led to a hiatus in 1996. The band reformed in 2005, and though they never recaptured their initial mainstream success, they remain a beloved act for fans of glam metal and continue to perform and release new music. Which is a cool thing.
