DREAM THEATER has recently wrapped up the songwriting phase for their sixteenth studio album. This forthcoming release heralds a significant reunion as it will be the first full-length album featuring Portnoy in 15 years, marking a notable moment for fans of the progressive metal icons.

Having co-founded DREAM THEATER alongside guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung in 1985, Portnoy‘s musical journey with the band spanned across a remarkable tenure. He contributed to 10 DREAM THEATER albums over two decades, commencing from their debut “When Dream And Day Unite” in 1989, extending through to “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” in 2009, before his departure in 2010.

The reunion between Portnoy and his former bandmates took a poignant turn when he attended DREAM THEATER‘s concert at the Beacon Theatre in New York City in March 2022. It marked his first live encounter with the band since parting ways with the iconic progressive metal ensemble thirteen years earlier.

In late 2010, following the departure of Portnoy, who had been with DREAM THEATER since its inception 38 years prior, Mike Mangini stepped into the drummer’s seat through a widely publicized audition. This audition became the focus of attention, as Mangini triumphed over six other elite drummers from around the globe: Marco Minnemann, Virgil Donati, Aquiles Priester, Thomas Lang, Peter Wildoer, and Derek Roddy. The rigorous selection process, spanning three days, was documented in a reality show format titled “The Spirit Carries On.”

When Portnoy‘s return to DREAM THEATER was first announced on October 25, 2023, Mangini said in a statement: “I understand DREAM THEATER‘s decision to get Mike Portnoy back at this time. As was said from Day 1, my place was not to fill all the roles that Mike held in the band. I was to play the drums in order to help the band carry on. My main role of keeping our live show working tightly on a nightly basis was an intense and rewarding experience. Thankfully, I got to experience playing music with these iconic musicians, as well as some fun times laced with humor.”
