In some sad news, we have learned that legendary British record producer Martin Birch, who is best known for engineering and producing albums by DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW, FLEETWOOD MAC, WHITESNAKE, BLACK SABBATH, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT and IRON MAIDEN, died over the weekend (Sunday, August 9) at the age of 71.
Birch’s death was confirmed by WHITESNAKE frontman David Coverdale, who tweeted: “It is with a very heavy heart I’ve just had verified my very dear friend & producer Martin Birch has passed away.
“Martin was a huge part of my life…helping me from the first time we met through until Slide It In…
“My thoughts & prayers to his family, friends & fans…Broken heart”
Birch has worked with some huge names in rock and metal. He began his career in music as an audio engineer for Jeff Beck, FLEETWOOD MAC and DEEP PURPLE. That was how he began! Then it was in 1981 when he began working with IRON MAIDEN, producing their first nine albums, from “Iron Maiden” to “Fear Of The Dark”. He also produced and engineered LPs for various DEEP PURPLE-related projects (RAINBOW, PAICE ASHTON LORD, WHITESNAKE, Roger Glover, Jon Lord).
The guy was such an influence to the guys in DEEP purple, that their song “Hard Lovin’ Man” from the “Deep Purple In Rock” album is dedicated to him.
Birch retired in 1992, after producing MAIDEN’s “Fear Of The Dark” album.
