SLAYER’s Surprise Reunion: Festival Appearances Announced, Kerry King Shreds On With Solo Project

Thrash metal titans SLAYER sent shockwaves through the scene with the announcement of their reunion for a limited run of festival appearances in September and October of 2024. This news comes just weeks after SLAYER guitarist Kerry King unveiled his highly anticipated solo project, simply called Kerry King with it’s debut album “From Hell I Rise” arriving in the days ahead.

Farewell Wasn’t Forever: SLAYER Returns to the Stage

SLAYER‘s final tour in 2019 marked the end of an era for thrash metal. Fans around the world mourned the apparent closing chapter for the legendary band. However, the recent announcement has reignited the flames of excitement. King himself has expressed what seems to be a tremendous enthusiasm for the reunion.

When asked in a recent talk with Revolver magazine if he had known about these shows prior to them being officially announced, the guitarist replied: “If you ask promoters, they’re going to have another answer. If you ask booking agents, they’ll probably have a third answer. But to me, it kind of came out of nowhere.

“Have we been getting offers the past few years? Yeah, we turn down offers every year, probably every month of every year. These three festivals are right around the five-year anniversary of our last tour, which I thought was kind of cool. So, I thought this might be the right time to test the water. It will be great to play for the fans again.”

Discussing whether he thinks these upcoming SLAYER shows will steal away some of the thunder from his new solo band when they hit the road in support of “From Hell I Rise”Kerry said: “Well, time will tell, and my answer would be, ‘hopefully not’. The funny thing is, it never occurred to me until the day the SLAYER announcement came, but [PhilDemmel [guitarist in Kerry‘s solo band] said, ‘Dude, is this real?’ And I’m, like, ‘It’s just a few weekends and that’s it.’

“Of course, Paul [BostaphSLAYER and KERRY KING drummer] knew. But I didn’t tell Phil, I didn’t tell Kyle [SandersKERRY KING bassist] and didn’t tell Mark [OseguedaKERRY KING singer] — and I said to the guys, ‘There’s no master plan here.’ I didn’t want anybody to start getting cold feet. I said, ‘This is a little moment in time, and yeah, KERRY KING is going to be touring, you know, hopefully later in the year, as well. But SLAYER is an entity and I’m just a person.’ But hopefully, we drive on with the solo project.”

This limited run of festival appearances offers a chance for die-hard SLAYER fans and newcomers alike to experience the band’s raw energy live. The reunion lineup features the same ferocious foursome that tore through stages in 2019: Kerry King on guitar, Tom Araya on vocals and bass, Gary Holt (also of EXODUS) filling in for the late Jeff Hanneman, and drummer Paul Bostaph.

Kerry King’s Solo Scorcher: From Hell I Rise

While SLAYER‘s reunion is a cause for celebration, Kerry King hasn’t been resting on his laurels. Just before the reunion news broke, King announced his debut solo album, “From Hell I Rise,” set for release on May 17th, 2024. This solo venture allows King to explore his musical vision outside the confines of SLAYER.

This all-star lineup promises a brutal and technically proficient sonic assault, sure to please fans of SLAYER and classic thrash metal in general.

Recently speaking with Eddie Jorgensen of San Francisco’s CBS SFKing spoke about the formation of his solo band, which sees the likes of drummer Paul Bostaph (SLAYER), bassist Kyle Sanders (HELLYEAH), guitarist Phil Demmel (formerly of MACHINE HEAD and VIO-LENCE) and vocalist Mark Osegueda (DEATH ANGEL).

When asked why he chose to recruit three well-known musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area metal scene for the new project, Kerry said: “I didn’t think of it like that, but that’s just how it panned out. I’ve known these guys — especially everybody from the Bay Area — for decades. All of them except Mark needed work. Certainly Paul and I were out of work.

Phil Demmel was also out of work, but he put his name in the hat very early and worked with us doing demos off and on. Every five or six weeks, he’d come down to play and we’d sound better. Using the demos we had, Phil would send new ideas whenever had new material. Phil‘s an incredible player and Mark‘s one of the best singers in thrash metal, without question. The pulse of thrash definitely comes from [the San Francisco Bay Area]. We [in SLAYER] were a little displaced because we were in Southern California, but at the end of the day, so was METALLICA.”

He continued: “I met Kyle in 2015 on the ‘Mayhem’ tour and we became friends very quickly. I knew that if I ever wanted a bassist, that’s who I’d be calling. He’s my East Coast connection. Paul‘s been working with me on and off since the early ’90s, so the talent and the friendship is there. I’m happy I could help the guys out when they didn’t have work. Right now, I get to go forward and show everybody what we got.”

King made sure to add that KERRY KING “isn’t a solo project. KERRY KING [the band] happens to have my name on it,” he explained. “This is my band and will be until we decide no longer to be one. Hopefully, that’s when we’re all done and want to hang it up to go sit on our porch and watch a bucket of grass grow. These are my guys now, so get used to them.”

King‘s solo project has already seen two live performances, showcasing a setlist that blends SLAYER classics with scorching tracks from his upcoming album. This dual threat – SLAYER‘s reunion and King‘s solo project – offers a unique opportunity for fans to witness Kerry King‘s musical prowess in both familiar and fresh contexts.

A Look Back: SLAYER’s Legacy and Enduring Influence

Formed in 1981, SLAYER quickly became a driving force in the thrash metal movement. Their music, characterized by aggressive riffs, pummeling drums, and dark lyrics, resonated with a generation of headbangers. Albums like “Reign in Blood” and “South of Heaven” solidified their place as thrash metal icons.

SLAYER‘s influence extends far beyond the thrash scene. Their aggressive sound and rebellious attitude paved the way for countless extreme metal bands, shaping the soundscape of modern heavy music.

A Reunion and a Solo Debut: A Thrash Metal Double Feature

The combination of SLAYER‘s reunion and Kerry King‘s solo project is a dream come true for thrash metal enthusiasts. Whether you’re a longtime SLAYER devotee eager to relive the band’s live fury, or a newcomer curious about the genre’s origins, this summer offers a chance to witness a true legend in action.
