Tuesday’s (June 28) edition of the NBC talent show America’s Got Talent featured a cover of Britney Spears‘ 2004 single “Toxic” by a capella death metal choir.

The brutal rendition of the pop song was performed by the Dremeka Choir, a Canadian singing group known as one of the only metal choirs in the world.

The Dremeka Choir‘s performance started off with the medieval song “O Fortuna” before developing into the outright brutality of the death metal version of “Toxic“.

Dremeka Choir conductor Pierre-Luc Seneca first off introduced the group to AGT creator and panel judge Simon Cowell and fellow judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, and host Terry Crews, saying: “My name is Pierre, and we are the Dremeka Choir. If there’s one thing we’re passionate about, it’s music and sharing the music, so [if we won AGT], we’d use the money [to] do this full time. … ‘Dremeka’ is a very ancient word that means ‘dream machine.’ And we are here to make you dream.”

Surprisingly, Simon Cowell seemed to enjoy the performance. “It’s like demons in a choir singing the song from The Omen,” he said. “It was so fantastically creepy. I’m all for going over to the dark side eventually, so I get it.”

However, Heidi Klum “didn’t particularly love it,” as USA Today reported. Mandel disagreed with her, telling the choir, “I think you’re opening the eyes and ears of America on our stage.”

The Dremeka Choir did well enough that they will proceed to the next round of America’s Got Talent auditions.

Recently, America’s Got Talent had another brutal metal performance courtesy of an 11-year old named Harper who sang SPIRITBOX’s “Holy Roller” much to the surprise of the judges as well.

It seems brutal metal is slowly making it’s way into mainstream media, whether they like it or not.
