Legendary frontman David Lee Roth recently commented on his possibly taking part in an all-star VAN HALEN tribute project which would feature Alex Van Halen and Joe Satriani. But just remember, we are talking about David Lee Roth here, so make of the comments what you will.

Last month, guitarist extraordinaire Joe Satriani confirmed that the three had been in consistent contact over the past year “about doing something — a tour, something like that — that was gonna be a true tribute to [late VAN HALEN guitarist] Eddie [Van Halen] and the VAN HALEN legacy.”

Satriani discussed the rumor soon after former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted let it slip to The Palm Beach Post that he had been approached by Alex Van Halen about six months previous about playing bass for the supposed project. Newsted would go on to say that he eventually realized that it would be impossible to do justice to VAN HALEN‘s legacy. “How could you?” Newsted stated. “There’s nobody that can top it, so how do you show it honor? I didn’t want it to be viewed as a money grab. And then it kind of just all fizzled.”

David Lee Roth, who announced his musical retirement back in October of last year, talked about his participation the supposed VAN HALEN tribute tour when he was spotted earlier this week by Fox News leaving the Los Angeles International Airport. When the singer was asked if he would be going back on tour any time soon, the VAN HALEN frontman responded, in his David Lee Roth way: “There’s always a tomorrow for a singer, not so much for a trombone player these days.”

He added: “How many times did Rocky retire? Seven. I think No. 3 was my favorite? How many times did Rambo have to come out of retirement in order to make the sequel?”

When Dave was asked about the possibility of a VAN HALEN tribute project, which would include Alex Van Halen and Joe Satriani, Roth said: “Ya, I wrote the songs … I was the one who named the band.”

He added: “I’m only in the middle of my first retirement.”

So take from that what you will. David Lee Roth is pretty well known for being cagey in his responses to…well pretty much anything he is asked.
