ANTHRAX Bassist Frank Bello To Join Black Metal Icons SATYRICON on European Festival Run

Norwegian black metal legends SATYRICON have recruited a familiar face from the thrash metal scene to handle bass duties for their upcoming European festival appearances. ANTHRAX bassist Frank Bello will be joining the band for shows including Sweden Rock Festival (Sweden), Mystic Festival (Poland), Hellfest (France), and Tons of Rock (Norway).

Over the weekend, SATYRICON shared a photo of their current touring lineup, including Bello, and wrote in an accompanying caption: “There is smoke in the chimney at the SATYRICON HQ every day. Next week we will fire up the engine again, starting at Sweden Rock and Mystic Festival. From there we go to HellfestTons Of RockARTmania Festival, Grieghallen/Beyond The Gates (two nights in a row),Brutal AssaultHellsinki Metal FestivalAlcatraz FestivalBloodstock Open Air and finally Næstved Metal Fest. In November we come to Latin America.

“As you can imagine, we look immensely forward to seeing all SATYRICON Ultras across the world again.

“If we’re not playing anywhere near you, maybe you will travel to see us, if not we will meet later some day. This is going to be THE summer!”

This past weekend, Bello shared a photo of him visiting the Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo in which he captioned: “Had a great day checking out the @naturhistorisk_museum_oslo and walking around Oslo today..#goodtimes #metal”.

This news comes after Bello stepped away from ANTHRAX‘s recent South American tour and a couple of US festivals due to personal reasons. The iconic thrash metal act filled the gap with a blast from the past, welcoming back founding member and original bassist Dan Lilker for his first appearance with the band in 40 years. Lilker, who played a pivotal role in the band’s early days, co-wrote and performed on their debut album “Fistful of Metal” and also jammed with drummer Charlie Benante and guitarist Scott Ian in STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH.

Beyond his busy upcoming music schedule, Bello recently celebrated a personal milestone – his 25th wedding anniversary with wife Teresa. Their son, Brandon, just turned 18, adding another chapter to the Bello family story.

For fans interested in a deeper dive into Bello‘s life and career, his memoir “Fathers, Brothers, And Sons: Surviving Anguish, Abandonment, And Anthrax” offers a glimpse into his journey. Released in October 2021, the book features a foreword by iconic KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons.

This upcoming stint with SATYRICON promises a unique experience for fans of both bands. Bello‘s thrash metal pedigree combined with the band’s black metal energy is sure to be an electrifying spectacle on the European festival circuit.

SATYRICON: From Norwegian Black Metal to Genre-Bending Experimentation

Formed in 1991 by vocalist/bassist Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven) and drummer Frost (Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad), SATYRICON is a pioneering force in Norwegian black metal. Their early albums, like “Dark Medieval Times” and “Nemesis Divina,” were steeped in the genre’s signature icy atmosphere, blast beats, and raw aggression. The group’s corpse paint and fiercely individualistic spirit further cemented their place in the black metal scene.

However, the band wasn’t content to remain confined by genre expectations. Over the years, they’ve incorporated elements of traditional heavy metal, post-rock, and even industrial music into their sound. This willingness to experiment has resulted in critically acclaimed albums like “Age of Nero” and “Deep Calleth Upon Deep,” showcasing a band unafraid to push boundaries.

SATYRICON remains a powerful live act, known for their intense and theatrical performances. Their ever-evolving sound and commitment to artistic freedom have secured their place as one of black metal’s most influential and enduring bands.
